Safety and Efficiency
Safety & Efficiency Improvements issues are a primary focus of the proposed runway extension. Construction of the runway extension at Erie International Airport will address the following safety concerns:
• Compliance with FAA minimum standards for runway safety area dimensions (Runway 6 end not currently in compliance)
• Address the safety of automobiles and pedestrian traffic on Asbury Road
• Address operational limitations (accommodating aircraft, including the critical design aircraft, requiring longer runways for takeoff)
• Address specific weather conditions at Erie (runways "contaminated" by snow and ice require an additional 15% adjustment for runway length for landing only)
• Reduce visibility minimums to improve the reliability of flight completion.
Construction of the proposed extension to Runway 24 at Erie International Airport will also provide the following benefits:
• Provide system linkage as part of the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS). The NPIAS focuses on goals of promoting safety, mobility, economic growth and trade, protection of communities and the natural environment, and national security.
