Construction Bid Package #1
The Erie Regional Airport Authority (ERAA) is extending Runway 6-24 at Tom Ridge Field in Millcreek Township, Pennsylvania.  This extension will begin at the eastern end of Runway 6-24 and extend for 1,920 feet crossing Powell Avenue.

Powell Avenue (ST 0299) is a north-south roadway currently located at the eastern edge of the airport property and will be relocated to accommodate extending the runway.  The approximate limits of the relocation are from West 20th Street northwardly and eastwardly to Marshall Drive near its intersection of West 12th Street (State Road 5).  The length of the relocation is approximately 5,300 feet.

In addition, this project includes drainage conveyance and storm water management area improvements, traffic control during construction, signage and pavement markings, wetland relocation and construction of an off-site mitigation area, a new dam, utility coordination and relocations including water, sewer, electric, telephone and gas, and removal of obstructions.

Construction Overview
In keeping with the findings of the 2003 Master PPlan for Erie International Airport, Tom Ridge Field (ERI), and the Erie Regional Airport Authority (ERAA) has embarked upon the $80 million Runway 6-24 Improvement Program.  In addition to bringing ERI into compliance with current FAA safety standards, extending the runway will enhance ERI’s ability to accommodate the current and future economic needs of the Erie region.

The Runway 6-24 Improvement Program is the largest capital improvement project in the region requiring extensive planning due to the complexities involved in integrating the lengthened runway into a settled residential area.  In addition to acquiring the necessary land for an extension, the complexity of the project requires the inclusion of a number of other components within the construction design including:

  • Runway extension
  • Taxiway extension
  • Golf Course modification
  • Roadway realignment
  • Storm water management
  • Wetland mitigation
  • Airspace easement

The locations of the components involved in the Runway 6-24 Improvement Program are so integrated that planning and construction are necessarily complicated and lengthy.  The most recent bid letting included:

  • Roadway realignment
  • Storm water management
  • Wetland mitigation

Future construction projects will include building the runway and taxiway extensions and bid letting can be expected during the first quarter of 2011.

The end product of this intricate project will be an increase in the economic contribution ERI makes to the Erie region.
